Questions to the neurologist, osteopathic practitioner, Vice-rector for academic Affairs of the Russian higher school of osteopathic medicine, Karpova Valentina.
— What is M-position? Which role does it play?
— M-position is the correct position of the child’s legs and pelvis in an upright position, which is conventionally designated with the letter M. In this position, baby’s knees are above the pelvis and rest against the mother, the pelvis is located lower and further from the mother. In this case, child’s pelvis is slightly turned towards the mother (twisted). Legs are spread aside at a comfortable angle for the baby (usually 60-110 degrees, the angle is formed by child’s hips). Knees are above the pelvis and rest against the mother.
Correct position ensures good hip joint dilatation. This contributes to the physiologically immature joints development owing to the provision of a certain position of the femur and the increase of blood supply.
How important is the angle of the newborn baby’s legs? Do doctors regulate it?
— Child’s legs are spread aside at a comfortable angle (usually 60-110 degrees, the angle is formed by the child’s hips). There are no clear doctors’ recommendations regarding the angle of hip joints dilatation. However, there are recommendations that the hips should not hang, the femoral head should tightly fit to the acetabulum.

— Why should not one use the kangaroos? How different is kangaroo from the SlingTankTop or ergonomic buckle carriers?

— In kangaroo due to its design, child’s legs hang down and the maximum weight is placed on the area of his/her perineum and pelvis. SlingTankTop and ergonomic buckle carrier ensure the correct M-position. Baby’s weight is distributed evenly.

— How does the spine of the newborn baby look like? What is the correct support? Why can not one use a hard support?
— The spine of a newborn child does not have physiological curves. Bends are formed as the development of static functions. While the child has not learned how to hold his/her back yet, the back should be rounded. This rounding allows the intervertebral discs to fully depreciate the adult’s steps. There is no static load on the spine and pelvis. Therefore, an elastic fabric is used in the production of ergonomic buckle carriers and SlingTankTops. Excessive tension of the tissue in the baby’s back or rigid support of the back contributes to the straightening of the spine and an excessive load on the spine and pelvis.
— Why should there be no holes for the hanging legs in the SlingTankTop? Why is this not required?
— The structure of the SlingTankTop does not imply the presence of holes for the baby’s legs. Therefore, the legs are naturally pressed against the mother’s body. Due to the fact that wearing a SlingTankTop is usually limited to a weight of 7-9 kg, the presence of holes is not required and child’s legs are located inside and pressed against the mother’s body. This maintains the normal tone of the calf muscles.
— Why is it important to choose the right size?

— A SlingTankTop or sling should tightly attach the child to the wearer. To control this, you can lean forward holding the child’s head: the child’s body will not move away from the mother’s body.
Once the SlingTankTop or sling is completely put on, there is a need for position correction — the adult, taking the child by the shin, pushes his knees up and brings them closer.
— How is mother’s back resting when wearing a SlingTankTop?

— Wearing a SlingTankTop contributes to the correct redistribution of child’s weight to the entire adult’s spine.
— Why does not the SlingTankTop need adjustment?

— A SlingtankTop is designed to carry a child up to the weight limit of 7-9 kg. There is no need for its further adjustment if it is carefully sized. The child tightly presses against the mother and the fabric covers and supports him/her. Once the SlingTankTop or sling is completely put on, there is a need for position correction — the adult, taking the child by the shin, pushes his knees up and brings them closer. After reaching the baby’s weight limit, it is more convenient to use an ergonomic buckle carrier.
— Why is it important for a child to be gently fixed in the right position while being inside the SlingTankTop?

— A rigid fixation will straighten the spine and lead to an excessive load on the pelvis and poor depreciation of the spine itself when the adult walks. That is why soft, but elastic support is so important. The elasticity and stretchability of the fabric for SlingTankTops, slings and ergonomic buckle carriers should be special and clearly regulated.

— How long can the baby be inside the SlingTankTop for?

— All babycarrying devices are used as a carrier and transportation.
Therefore, the optimal time of simultaneous wearing is no more than an hour or two. Then the child should be taken out and given the opportunity to actively move his/her legs and hands, lie on a flat surface. This is an important stage in the development and acquisition of motor skills.

— Why are there so many points of fixations on the mother? How do they help when babywearing?

— The presence of the fixation points provides a comfortable baby’s stay inside the SlingTankTop and ensures a proper and equal distribution of child’s weight on the entire spine of an adult.

— Why is the supporting hood so important?

— The children who are not able to hold their head yet, while being in relaxed state their head should not lean towards their chest and should not be thrown back. A supporting hood helps to maintain the correct midline position of the baby’s head.

— How should the child be dressed while being inside the SlingTankTop?

— If you are carrying a child inside a SlingTankTop at home, then 1 layer of clothing is enough for him/her. It can be a baby body suit, a cotton footed jump/sleepsuit.
While being outdoors, it depends on the weather conditions. If it is cool, then you may need an extra romper, socks, a hat. For the mother — a babywearing jacket.

— Why is it important that the fabric is breathable?

— Breathable fabric allows the child to feel comfortable while being inside the SlingTankTop and does not negatively affect the functions of thermoregulation.

— Why is it important for the supporting hood not to cover the baby’s head completely?

— If the head of the child is covered completely, it is difficult to control his/her breath. Therefore, it is not necessary to completely cover the head with a hood.

— Why is it important to use the original products?

— Original products are distinguished by the availability of all certificates and comply with international standards, which protects the buyer from forgery and helps to maintain your health and the health of your baby!
